How to Grow on Instagram Slowly (and Why Slow Growth Is Still Growth)

April 16, 2025•4 min read

Can I tell you something? Slow growth is still growth.

It's easy to look at someone who went viral overnight and feel like you're doing it wrong. But viral followers don't book your services, buy your products or show up to your workshop. The right people do. And the right people usually show up one at a time.

So let's talk about how to grow on Instagram slowly, on purpose, in about 15 minutes a day.

The math that changed how I think about followers

Imagine you gained just one new follower a day. Not a bot. Not a "sorta follower." A real person who actually cares about what you do.

Graphic showing 365 dots: one new follower a day equals 365 real people by the end of the year

By the end of the year, that's 365 people who could become clients, customers or your biggest cheerleaders. That's way better than thousands of followers who never engage, right?

What slow, steady marketing looks like in real life

This isn't just a nice idea. These are real numbers from client accounts I work on, using simple, consistent, human marketing (no hacks, no buying followers):

Real client results: plus 577 percent accounts reached, plus 736 percent profile visits, plus 273 percent impressions, 64.8K views on one post, 47 percent email open rate, plus 30 percent new leads

Not one of those came from chasing trends 24/7. They came from showing up consistently, talking to the right people and making it easy for them to say yes.

The 15-minute slow growth routine

Here's the routine I teach. Set a timer, do these four things, then get back to your life.

1. Find and follow your people (3 minutes)

Search for accounts that serve the same people you do, but aren't direct competitors. Use hashtags, location tags and the "suggested for you" list on accounts you love. Follow 3 to 5 a day.

Example: a Canadian kids' clothing shop could search #canadiankidsclothing, #shopsmallcanada and local mom groups, then follow other kids' brands, toy shops, family photographers and mom bloggers. Same audience, different offer.

2. Leave real comments (5 minutes)

Comment on 5 posts from those accounts, and make them real. Not "great post! 🔥" but something specific: "This colour palette is so dreamy. Is that the new fall line?"

When you comment thoughtfully, their audience sees you too. It's the easiest free visibility there is.

3. Collaboration, not competition (2 minutes)

Once a week, send a friendly DM to one of those like-minded businesses. Here's a script you can copy:

"Hi [name]! I've loved watching your [product/content] lately, especially [specific thing]. I run [your business] and I think we serve a really similar crowd. Would you ever be open to a little collab, like a giveaway or a shared Reel? No pressure at all, just love what you're doing!"

Collabs put you in front of a whole new audience that already trusts the person sharing you.

4. Post something worth saving (5 minutes)

You don't need to post every day. Two or three good posts a week beats seven rushed ones. Here's my full guide on how often to post. Focus on:

  • Carousels people save: tips, checklists, "save this for later" content.

  • Reels from real life: film what you're already doing. Here's how I film a Reel anytime, anywhere.

  • Captions that sound like you: this is where most people get stuck, so I made you something for it. 👇

Free: my Plug & Play Caption Creator

Writing captions is the part that eats the most time. So I turned my caption process into a free Claude skill. You tell it about your business once, it learns your voice, and then it writes ready-to-post captions with hooks, hashtags and alt text in about a minute. It works on the free Claude plan, and the one-page guide walks you through setup.

FAQ

How many followers should I gain a day?

There's no magic number. Even one real follower a day is 365 a year. Focus on the right people, not the biggest number.

Does following and unfollowing still work?

Please don't. It feels spammy and it attracts people who won't stick around. Follow accounts you genuinely want to see, and keep following them.

How long until I see results?

Give it 60 to 90 days of the 15-minute routine. Watch your profile visits, saves and DMs, not just your follower count. Those are the numbers that turn into sales.

Should I pay for followers or use growth apps?

No. Fake followers hurt your reach because they never engage, and Instagram notices. Slow and real wins every time.
