Do I Need a Social Media Manager? Why It Won't Fix Your Marketing
You've hit your limit. You're posting at 10pm, the reels aren't landing, and you think: I just need to hire someone to do this.
So you hire a social media manager. The feed looks gorgeous. Three months later… the phone still isn't ringing.
I've watched this happen over and over in my 15 years in marketing. And it's usually not because the social media manager did a bad job.
It's because social media was never the whole plan. It's one piece of the puzzle.
What a social media manager does (and doesn't)
A good one plans, creates and posts your content, keeps your feed consistent, and gets you seen. That matters!
But here's what they usually don't do:
Build your email list
Write blogs that get you found on Google and AI search like ChatGPT
Follow up with your leads
Set up the system that turns followers into paying clients
So you end up with more likes… and the same bank balance.
The whole puzzle
Social media gets you seen.
Email builds trust, and it's the one audience you actually own.
Your blog gets you found, even while you sleep.
A simple follow-up system turns "interested" into "booked."
Miss a piece and the whole thing leaks.
What a "simple follow-up system" actually looks like
This is the piece almost everyone skips. Someone likes your post, clicks your link, maybe even messages you… and then nothing happens. Not because they weren't interested, but because life got busy and nobody followed up.
A follow-up system just means no lead falls through the cracks, without you having to remember everything. Here's what mine includes (pick 2 or 3 to start):
An instant reply. When someone fills out your form or DMs a keyword, they get a friendly message right away with your next step. Speed wins. The first person to reply usually gets the client.
A welcome email series. 3 to 5 short emails that go out automatically after someone grabs your freebie: who you are, how you help, a client win, and an easy invite to book.
One booking link everywhere. In your bio, email signature, blog posts and DMs. No back-and-forth trying to find a time.
Missed-call text back. If you can't pick up, they get a text saying "Sorry I missed you! How can I help?" so they don't call the next person on Google.
The 2-day nudge. If someone books a call or asks for pricing and goes quiet, a short "Just checking in, any questions I can answer?" goes out 48 hours later.
A simple pipeline. One place where you can see every lead: new, talking, booked, client. Even a spreadsheet works to start.
After-the-sale love. A thank-you, a review request and a check-in at 30 days. Happy clients are your best marketing, and the easiest people to sell to again.
You don't need five different apps for this. I run all of it (forms, emails, texts, bookings and my pipeline) inside Ivorey, and set it up once. Then it just runs in the background while I'm making dinner.
Can't afford an agency yet? Start here.
This is exactly where I'd start if I were rebuilding from zero on a small budget.
Get clear on who you help. One sentence: "I help ___ who struggle with ___ get ___." Everything else gets easier.
Pick ONE platform. Go where your people actually are, and show up 3x a week instead of everywhere once a month.
Start an email list with one freebie. A checklist, a guide, a mini training. Your followers aren't yours. Your list is.
Write one blog a month. Answer the questions your clients ask you every week. That's how you get found on Google, Pinterest and AI search.
Repurpose everything. One blog = 1 email + 3 posts + 5 Pinterest pins. Work once, show up everywhere.
Put it all in one place. I run my website, blog, emails, bookings and client portal all in Ivorey. One login, one bill, way fewer subscriptions.
Get a simple filming setup. No studio needed. I film everything from a 400 sq ft tiny house with my iPhone and a few small tools (see my setup below).
Let AI do the heavy lifting. I run a full client roster solo, with Claude helping me plan, write and repurpose. It's the closest thing to a team member on a small budget.
My simple content setup
KraftGeek Magnetic Tripod — snaps onto my iPhone with MagSafe, comes with a remote, and doubles as a selfie stick.
DJI Mic Mini — tiny wireless mic, so my audio sounds clean even in a small space.
DJI Osmo Pocket 3 — my pocket camera for smooth, steady video on the go.
DJI Osmo Mini Tripod — sets the Pocket 3 up anywhere, from the kitchen counter to the garden.
